A Serbian Film Review
Serbia, What The F***. You may think that you should see this film just to shock you, you shouldn't see this film. It aims to disgust and it achieves that aim but overshoots the boundaries a bit making Saw look like the Tweenies.... starring Michael Cera. Justifying the necrophilia, child rape and death by penis to the eye, the director has said "This is a diary of our own molestation by the Serbian government... It's about the monolithic power of leaders who hypnotize you to do things you don't want to do. You have to feel the violence to know what it's about"
The director (I'm not going to refer to people by their actual names in this review because they don't make sense and the name Srdan is not a name, someone needs to give Serbia some money so they can afford vowels) has just thought "how fucked up can we make a film" and then he made it and everyone said "dude you just made child porn and penis death" and the director found the age old hollywood justification of "its a metaphor". It isn't a metaphor it's just disgusting.
Now onto the actual film after that initial rant, and if there are any Serbians reading "žalostan" for my comments, but seriously get some vowels. The film follows a porn star who gets asked to do an art film, gets forced to rape someone, says hell no, gets drugged, wakes up 3 days later, finds out what happened, chunders, dies, end. It's the finds out what happened bit that makes up the story as it includes some brutally disturbing scenes and whatever the director was thinking with his metaphor I did not need to see what the actor in the film dubs "newborn porn"...yes that is exactly what it sounds like. So bad is this scene, and a later scene, that when it was shown at a Spanish festival the person that allowed it to get shown was charged with "exhibiting child pornography ".
The acting isn't bad, the dialogue, while in Serbian, is actually pretty decent and the aesthetic and camera work actually work for the film. If only it wasn't so disgusting. This film is like watching all those internet shock videos like 2 girls 1 cup, 2 guys 1 horse, 1 man 1 jar, hatchet pain olympics etc but drawn but drawn out into a 104 minute film
I can't award this film a score, there is no way to rate it. When I watched it with my mates at uni we started with 5 people and by the end of the movie I was the only one left because others had left in disgust, also it was like 4 in the morning and people were knackered, but mainly disgust. As soon as I watched it I deleted it off my system just in case someone found it on there and reported me to the police. If you really want to be disgusted and are desensitized to the current generation of gore and horror films, or if you just want some good old fashioned simulated child pornography (Tom Hobbs), then you can sit through this movie, if not then you might want to give this a miss and keep your innocence. This film took mine.
