Cabin In The Woods
Apologies for the lack of posts as of late, I've found myself inundated with real life work so haven't had the time or energy to stream of consciousness onto this blog about movies, mainly because I haven't seen enough as of late. But this all changed when I decided hey let's watch that film by Joss Whedon because he is awesome and (almost) everything he's made is awesome. Just to clarify Whedon only wrote and produced this film whilst the film was directed by Drew Goddard who's worked with Whedon on Buffy as well as writing Cloverfield.
Now this film may be the most interesting film I've ever seen, definitely the most interesting horror film, because it incoporates so many genres and such exciting set pieces but also is both a parody, a homage and a deconstruction of the horror genre. I reaaaally wish I could tell you how it is but anything I say on this topic would give away the whole concept and the twist which the whole film pretty much runs on. Not to say this is a M Night Smanalayahan film as it doesn't just build up a film to throw a twist at you at the end. It twists and turns, sometimes in the space of a few minutes, to produce an end product that constantly throws new exciting ideas at you, even if the trailer may have given away the underlying plot.
So this isn't just 5 high school kids going to a cabin in the woods (a la Evil Dead) but thats the basis. Producing a stereotypical view of horror films and then twisting and distorting that image and producing a story that, while may get ridiculously grand in its scope, still manages to please the viewer and provide some lovely gore and humour.
In case you hadn't noticed I am completely endorsing this film but it's a complete b***** to review because I don't wasn't to give anything away and ruin your experience in any way so what I will say is see this film, take in its madness and take it as an allegory for filmmaking if you will (which I did because im well smart n that init) or just enjoy monsters chasing teenagers and the obligatory horror film boobage.
Whilst some may see what the films getting at relatively early on, the ride to get there and the final 10 minutes will reward you with all out carnage so for that alone it would get a high mark but the interesting story its based around boosts it to a high 9.5 out of 10. Whedon really is doing well in this blog isn't he (High scoring Avengers)? Keep up the good work you ginger fellow you.
