Super Review
SHUT UP CRIME! This may be the darkest comedy that's come out of America in a long time. It essentially poses the question what if a guy who, we must assume has a number of mental disorders, decided to become a superhero to fight evil. Now this came out a year or so after Kick Ass so the comparisons are going to be obvious but the two films are so different in tone, budget and message that the comparisons are unwarranted.
There is some hilarity to be had throughout the film but this is a dark comedy. Prepare to get dark. This may be the most realistic portrayal of "superheroes without powers" but it gives a comic book spin to it. The brutal violence that is shown is juxtaposed with the "POW!" or "BANG!" or "WUPPOW!", well maybe not wuppow. This gives the film a good time feel which kind of leads you into believing that this film isn't an 18. This film is an 18. People get f***ed up. Legs break, heads crack, blood flows. Spiderman this ain't.
The film follows Rainn Wilson of The Office: An American Workplace getting his ex-junkie wife being taken by drug dealer Kevin Bacon along with mental sidekick Ellen Page. So for a little independent film this has some strong cast backing it which is a relative rarity.
At times this film gets awesome, explosions occur, beatings happen, people get nicely messed up, but at times it completely misfires and ends up with some of the most random head scratching-ly bizarre scenes. Especially when he gets touched by God's finger, you'll know what I'm talking about if you see it.
Short review this one, but I kind of recommend it but if you watch the trailer you've pretty much seen the film. I give it a 6 wham-bam-thank-you-mams out of 10. Its an interesting little film to watch and mentally switch off to but you won't be ultimately disappointed if you miss it, no-one really talks about it anymore.
