Game Of Thrones Review
Oh so you guys thought this was just a movie review site? Well Mattman just branched out to wider pastures and onto TV series. Well to call Game Of Thrones a TV series is to not appreciate it fully, it's pretty much just a ten episode film. Of course as a reviewer I will attempt to keep spoilers to a minimum, but you should have finished watching this series anyway so if i do spoil something it serves you right for either not having Sky Atlantic or being too much of a p**** to torrent/stream it online.
Game of Thrones follows the story of George R.R Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels and it apparently follows it pretty well. The author was happy with the adaption although most fans main gripe was that there was not enough sex or violence like the books. Let's just get this clear, this show is one of the most violent and sexual shows on TV, if they had adhered exactly to the books this thing wouldn't have been allowed on television until 1 in the morning.
The most remarkable thing about the show, apart from the extremely brilliant production values and sense that this is a real, living world, is the characterisation of its inhabitants. Each character is given a fruitful backstory and the main problem of the show is at times it's hard to keep track. The book provided so much information about these characters that sometimes the show has to cram it all in to make sense of it. As you may be able to see on the poster on the left of your screen, it is described as an "epic" series. Well that pretty sums up my whole review. This is possibly the most epic television show there has ever been and could easily have worked as a film, although a ten hour long film may grate a bit.
I mentioned earlier about the characterisation, but I'll say it again. This show has caused me to feel for characters the most out of any show in my life. I cared more about their deaths and I wanted retribution more than in any medium. This is through superb situations from Martin and also the superb acting from the cast. Sean Bean plays a brilliant chilled out honour driven warrior whilst the fat King is portrayed brilliantly by the guy from those Tesco Value adverts, I bet he can't believe his luck in landing this part to gain some actual credibility again. Everyone acts brilliantly but the main star is the Imp, Peter Dinklage. His development throughout the story goes from a comic side character to possibly the most intriguing and deep character in the entire show, "In our father's eyes, all dwarves are bastards".
In conclusion if you haven't seen it watch the f*** out of this show and its unlikely you'll be disappointed. I shall award it a cheeky 9.5 out of 10 only because the finale set up the second season as opposed to being a conclusion to the first, if season 2 is anything like season 1 then I may buy a broadsword and start going medieval all over the place. If you see me walking around in full leather and body armour, you'll know why.
