Hobo With A Shotgun Review
This film does not give a s***. That's all you need to know right from the off because you have to be prepared for what this throwback to 80s exploitation films has in store for you. Be it burning buses full of children or driving heads off with barbed wire, this film achieves its 18 rating and it achieves it with aplomb.
Firstly a little back-story, a competition was held when Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez were making their Grindhouse films (Planet Terror was good, Death Proof was average) and they asked their mates to come up with fake Grindhouse style trailers to go before these films. There was a competition for one spot and one entrant created a fake trailer to a film called Hobo With A Shotgun, "But that's the name of the film" yes reader, yes it is. This is actually the second fake trailer to become a real film the first being the brilliantly over the top Machete. Whilst Machete updated the Grindhouse film to a modern day blockbuster, Hobo With A Shotgun is not as ashamed of its B-movie roots and completely feels like it could have been made during the 80s. Be this a good thing or a bad thing is entirely up to the viewer.
There are going to be people who will hate this, to be honest at times I can see their point. As a film it may not actually hold up as the back-story is non-existent, the acting ridiculously OTT and the colours ridiculously vivid. If you can get past that though you will be treated with some of the most ridiculous gore and most true to Grindhouse films than the recent offerings from Roderiguez and Tarantino.
In a recent interview Hauer was asked what audiences would take away from this movie, his response was "audiences are gonna take away.....they're gonna have a good time this film is ridiculous". Don't expect any deep profound moments in this film. The plot is essentially there's a bad guy doing bad stuff, here's a shotgun, boom, move on.
The film is absolutely bonkers and I'm going to review it in terms of entertainment factor, not in terms of how good the film actually is because that may be significantly lower. Entertainment-wise however I rate this film 8 out of 10. Hobotastic.
